Dear Ranger Families, 

Nordhoff is very proud to serve you and your children, our students, on their last and final educational step here in the Ojai Unified School District. We believe that the phrase "Citizen-Student-Athletes/Artists" best describes our Rangers. We uphold the ideal of students as citizens first, and so we emphasize the importance of character, personal integrity and ethics. Second, we value a rigorous academic program, focusing on challenging students in all academic pursuits, particularly those that the student ultimately chooses as most relevant for his/her post-secondary goals and life. Third, what students do outside of the classroom with respect to athletics, music, drama, dance, community service etc. is central to our vision for our Rangers because so many aspects of personal growth and many life skills are developed beyond classroom walls.

Additionally, we believe Nordhoff High School can best be described in four words: Scholarship, Community, Opportunity and Tradition. We want our Rangers to exhibit the hallmark traits of scholarship, and so we challenge them to be the most thoughtful, skilled, articulate, knowledgeable, creative problem-solvers as possible. And, we always challenge our students to not merely attend Nordhoff High School, but rather to become a member of the community at Nordhoff  by being involved in the life of the school beyond the classroom, and we believe the core of the life of this school is in community. With Nordhoff's broad array of course offerings, clubs, athletic and artistic experiences available, Nordhoff represents many opportunities for our students to grow into the kind of people we would be thankful to have as neighbors, friends, coworkers and leaders. And, with over 100 years of history, Nordhoff has a rich, wonderful tradition and culture for students to find their place in, to benefit from, and ultimately pass on to the next generation of Rangers.

Today: PHYSICALS FOR ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION FOR THE 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR AND SUMMER PRACTICE:

 11th & 12th grade boys on Friday, May 22

All physicals are at 7:00 AM at the Ojai Valley Family Medicine Group (117 Pirie Rd., Ste. D, Ojai).  Cost is $20.00; please make checks payable to Nordhoff Athletics.  Doctors donate all money back to support NHS athletics.  Thank you, doctors!

The Cancer Awareness Club meets today in room K-3. Come by and show your support for those that have been affected by cancer.

"Come join the new Magic: the Gathering Club after school on Fridays in room D5.  All players are welcome: veterans, new players, and people interested in learning the game. For more information, come to D5 at lunch."

Our next Science Guest Lecture is “People, and Pythons, and Bears, Oh Yes!: A Taste of Research in the Biomedical Sciences.”  

Professor Vander will be presenting some examples of exciting recent discoveries in the biomedical sciences.  His focus will not be on the facts themselves but rather on the specific research that led to the facts.

Ask your science teacher for a pass to attend next Thursday’s event from 9:00 - 10:00 in the I building.  

Prom pictures are in.  Please come to D-11 to pick up during snack, lunch or after school.  If you did not pay for your photo please bring payment when you come to pick up photos.

Seniors. It's time to start thinking about who will perform for your "Class of 2015" graduation ceremony. Applications are available in the music department hallway bulletin board. Applications are due by Thursday, May 28th and auditions will be held on Tuesday, June 2nd after school.

Pick out that favorite song and start preparing. Live music is preferred, but you can use background tracks as well.

ATTENTION SENIORS: Mr. Monson is now taking names of students who would like to give a Commencement Speech at Graduation.  Please see Amy in the office to provide your name.  The deadline is Wednesday May 27th.  

Attention all students who have received an F in World Geography, Health, or English in a previous semester or at the end of this semester.  Summer School will be held Wednesday, June 17th- Wednesday, July 8th from 8am-12pm. You will automatically be signed up for summer school.  Please check with you counselor if you have any questions regarding making up credits.


THIS IS THE LAST WEEK TO CHECK OUT LIBRARY BOOKS.  Please return all of the books that you are not currently using and check your fines list in the grade specific binders on the circulation desk.

SENIORS!!!  You have until noon on JUNE 11th to turn in all your textbooks, English Dept. novels, and library books and pay any fines/fees that you may owe in order to receive your diploma and/or receive your transcripts.  This includes all sports fees, Spanish fees, cafeteria fees, music fees, and library fines/fees.

Attention juniors! If you plan to participate in the Senior Sibling Program next year you must attend the mandatory meeting at lunch on Thursday, the 28th. At this meeting we will be choosing groups and confirming participation. There will be pizza. If you missed the first meeting and you want to join the program you can attend this meeting to sign up. This is mandatory if you would like to participate in the program.

  The Nordhoff High School Music Department proudly presents their spring concert, Friday Night in the Park, on Friday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Libbey Bowl. 

            The all-department concert will feature the award-winning Symphonic Band, String Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Gold ‘n Blue Chorale and Jazz Band, under the direction of Bill Wagner.

            The upcoming Spring concert is free with no reserved seating in the bowl.  For additional information, please visit nhsmusic.com or call (805) 640-4343, ext. 1861.

CCC NEWS:

Hours will be posted outside the CCC. I can be reached by email when the CCC is closed.

New scholarship opportunity - The California Latino Legislative Caucus Foundation is offering  scholarships to seniors with a minimum 2.5 GPA planning to attend a college or university in the fall. Applications are available online at www.cllcf.org and the deadline to apply is June 1st.
