Our next Science Guest Lecture is next Monday, March 2 presented by UCSB Professor Tommy Dickey about the Polar Bears of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada.
Polar bears are the top predators of the Arctic and warning symbols of global warming. In this presentation, Professor Dickey will describe the environments, characteristics, and lives of polar bears. Polar bears live alongside humans for a few months each year in Churchill, Canada, which resides on Hudson Bay and is a unique home for both species. The polar bear subpopulation of Churchill is the most studied by scientists and most observed by tourists making Churchill the “Polar Bear Capital of the World.” He will show photographs and videos illustrating how the Churchill polar bears feed, spar, compete for mates, raise their cubs, co-exist with nearby people, and sometimes even play with dogs! He will conclude by discussing factors, which will be important for the long-term existence of these white furry giants of the Arctic.
Ask your science teacher for a pass to attend next Monday's event from 9:00 - 10:00 in the I building.
